Types of Crimes

The United States has more than one crime being committed every single day. Some crimes such as street crimes have high occurrence (Hall 2005). However, current studies indicate declining trend in the rates of street crime (homicide, rape, assault, robbery with violence, and burglary etc). Much of these crimes are committed by an alienated and self-destructive underclass. Another common crime is the drug-crime, which is closely linked to the first problem (street).

Some drug-intoxicated persons commit crimes because they have lost their moral obligation while under the influence of drugs. Ideally, crimes are classified as follows;

Drug crimes. Crimes under this category comprise a range of offenses connected with the use (for purposes of intoxication or otherwise proved), transportation, purchase, and sale of illegal drugs (within the United States).

Street crimes. The most common forms of this predatory crime (rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, and theft) occur most frequently on urban streets. Studies indicate that racial minority citizens’ account for a considerably high number of the arrests related with street crimes.

Organized crimes. This term refers to the illegal activities of members of these criminal groups that supply illegal goods and services or involve unlawful actions.

Political crimes. This is a crime that contains both crimes committed by the government and crimes against the government. Political crimes are motivated by political interest especially to attain or retain political power.

Victimless crimes. These crimes arise from consensual acts (in which people are voluntary participants). In violations of these crimes only the perpetrator is hurt, such as the personal use of illegal drugs, constitute called victimless crimes.

White-collar crimes. White-collar crimes are felonies that persons commit while executing their legitimate professions and jobs. White-collar criminals demonstrate unethical ways for self-gain (such as embezzlement of funds) or the undue benefit of a business (for instance, corporate price-fixing). Victims of white collar crime include the states’ economy, employers, consumers, and the environmentalists (through pollution) (Henry 2001).
