Bias in Psychological Testing

As a professional in psychological testing, there are three major types of bias that I am prone to encounter in my practice. These three are construct bias, method bias and item bias (American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association & National Council on Measurement in Education, 1999).

Construct bias occurs when a construct such as the personality of a client gives two different results in the tests which measure the original culture of the client and the new culture of the client. This difference can occur as a result of the changes in the construct of the client under examination (Kaplan & Sacuzzo, 2009). Method Bias is associated with the manner through which the test is administered to the client. This can occur as a result of poor translation of the results obtained in the test. The item bias, on the other hand, is a bias that can arise from the effect of the items used in the test. This is usually as a result of poor translation of the selection for items.
