Academic Paper: Definition of Body
Definition of Body
Opinions defining the meaning of the body have differed significantly among scholars. From the ancient Greek times to the modern world of the twentieth century, the human body has been described differently by scholars. Paul in the Holy Scriptures described the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Christians have always believed that the body is not only physical but also spiritual. Descartes and Sartre have both described the body as a machine and the self respectively. From these meanings, one can, therefore, conclude the social construction of the body is defined by an individual, culture and subcultures. Body construction defines an individual’s identity. Synnott (1993) pg 37.
